How to Win Prize Money

MGA offers prizes for its weekly events, major tournaments, and optional Gross and Net Skins games. This document outlines the criteria and structure used to distribute funds to event winners.

Net Prizes

MGA events will pay a total Net prizes per participant to the top 30% finishers in each flight . This prize is distributed based upon a 70% factor. Net prizes are paid in Pro Shop Credits.

Example Calculation at $6/player:

  • A flight consists of 10 teams, each with 4 players:
    Total participants = 10 teams × 4 players = 40 players
    Prize pool = 40 × $6 = $240

  • Top 30% of 10 teams = 3 teams will receive payouts

  • Points allocation:

    • 1st Place = 1.00 points

    • 2nd Place = 0.70 points

    • 3rd Place = 0.49 points

    • Total = 2.19 points

  • Payouts:

    • 1st Place = (1.00 / 2.19) × $240 = $110

    • 2nd Place = (0.70 / 2.19) × $240 = $77

    • 3rd Place = (0.49 / 2.19) × $240 = $53

Gross Game Competition

The MGA offers a Gross Game Competition during pick your own foursome and pair events.  Teams have the option to compete for gross prizes against other teams in the same flight.

MGA will pay the lowest gross team in the event.  The Gross Prize Pool will be the sum total of $1 per participant per each course.

Flighting

The goal of the MGA is to create an atmosphere that excites the competitive players and ensures the enjoyment of all members. These goals can be conflicting, but both are essential for the MGA now and in the future. Therefore, the flighting we use will be based on a players handicap index, their posting history and their performance in MGA and PGA events. Although the algorithm for this flighting may not be perfect, we urge you to understand the goal and provide feedback, so that we can evolve the model to match the needs of our members.

Skins

Skins Game is an additive way to earn money, whereby participating players compete for a prize on each hole. The prize at stake is called the “SKIN” a term derived from a bag of money, the bag itself made of skin.

The MGA sponsors an optional  “Hole by Hole Skins Game”.  Participants put money into a pot at the start of the tournament, and he player who has the SINGLE lowest score (GROSS or NET) for a hole, will earn a skin. Post-round, the skins money pot will be divided up by the players who earned skins.

GROSS SKINS and NET SKINS entries will be available to purchase on the day of each event.  A representative of the MGA Board will be stationed at the tournament registration table to record the players for the skins game and collect the fees.  The fee per skin is $5.00, and exact change is requested.

Note: Net skins are calculated based on a 50% Allocation.  A person is given ½ shot for each point of their handicap.  For example, a person with a 13 handicap, receives ½ shot on the hardest 13 holes.  With the change from colors to numbers for the tee boxes, MGA will use the following tee boxes for the skins.

Skins Pool                       Tee Box Assigned

White Skins                    1,1/2,2, and 2/3

Green Skins                   3, 3/4, 4,4/5, and 5

Cash awards for skins will be distributed to the winners in each pool.  -Awards will be calculated by the PGA National Professional Staff using the Golf Genius application.

Winners may pick up their cash awards at the tournament registration table through the subsequent two (2) tournaments.  Thereafter, winners must contact the MGA financial officer to receive their money.  Awards will be forfeited if not picked up by the end of the season.
